Does God speak through dreams?
Answered by New Wine
Yes. Scripture shows God speaking through dreams from Genesis to the New Testament, and nothing in the text says He stopped.
The Biblical Case
In Numbers 12:6, God tells Aaron and Miriam that when there is a prophet among them, He makes Himself known in visions and speaks in dreams. Jack Deere draws on this passage to say dreams are a common way God speaks to those who are prophetic.
Dreams also carry God's purposes in the New Testament. An angel speaks to Joseph in a dream in Matthew 1:20, and Acts 2:17 promises that in the last days, when the Spirit is poured out, old men will dream dreams.
God even uses a dream to strengthen Gideon in Judges 7:13-15. A Midianite soldier dreams of a barley loaf tumbling into the camp, and his companion interprets it as God delivering the army to Gideon.
God can and does speak in dreams, to His people and sometimes to those outside the covenant.
What Keeps It in Proportion
Alexander Maclaren, reflecting on Gideon's episode, notes that God spoke by dreams even to outsiders like Pharaoh and Pilate's wife. He calls this the lowest form of divine communication, not to be looked for when the higher teaching of the Spirit of Christ is open to us all.
That is a sober word. Dreams are real, but they are not where we should anchor our hearing.
Daniel Kolenda adds that God's guidance in Acts comes through many channels: the Spirit's direct prompting of Philip and Peter, and the restraining of Paul from entering Bithynia. Whether we label every instance "prophetic" matters less than recognizing that God is speaking and leading.
How to Hold It
- Receive dreams as one avenue among many, not the primary one.
- Weigh them against Scripture, which remains the final standard.
- Remember Gideon's pattern: the dream confirmed what God had already promised; it did not replace His word.
God still speaks in the night, but He speaks most clearly and most reliably in His Word and by His Spirit.
Welcome the dream, but let Scripture and the Spirit interpret it.
