Do you have to speak in tongues to be saved?

No. Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ, and speaking in tongues is not a condition for it.

What Scripture Says About Salvation

Paul puts it plainly:

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."

Ephesians 2:8-9

Tongues is not a prerequisite added to that gift. The sermon "Is Oneness (Apostolic, or Jesus Only) Pentecostalism Christian?" makes the point from inside the Pentecostal tradition: Paul never teaches that you must speak in tongues to be saved or to have the Spirit.

Where the Confusion Comes From

Some traditions read Acts 2:38 and Romans 8:9 as collapsing conversion, Spirit indwelling, and Spirit baptism into one event, so that no tongues means no Spirit means no salvation. That sermon distinguishes them: the Spirit comes to dwell in us at new birth, and there is a further experience of empowering for service.

That distinction matters. Acts 19:2 shows believers who needed more than they had, yet Paul did not question their faith.

Tongues and Spirit Baptism

Tongues is the normal, expected sign that accompanies Spirit baptism, the pattern we see in Acts 2:4, 10:46, and 19:6. But even there it is not a test of the experience. Michael Brown says he would not tell someone who has never spoken in tongues that they have not been baptized in the Spirit, especially when prophecy and other gifts operate through them.

Derek Prince, who spoke in tongues from the day he was saved, still reminds us in 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 that tongues without love is empty noise.

Salvation rests on Christ's finished work, not on any manifestation. Seek the fullness of the Spirit with expectation, but rest your assurance of salvation in the cross alone.
